“Protect the High Line,” the group opposing the plan by Related Cos. and Wynn Resorts to build a casino hotel on the West Side of Manhattan, stated that their membership has exceeded 5,000.

The group, named after the iconic park it aims to safeguard, has quickly gathered support in its five-month existence. Their main cause is to oppose the proposed $12 billion investment in the Western Rail Yards by Related, which includes Wynn New York as its centerpiece if it secures one of the three downstate casino licenses yet to be awarded.

The extensive backing of 5,000 individuals demonstrates the widespread community resistance to this plan,” stated Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line. “People from diverse backgrounds are unified in rejecting proposals that endanger the High Line’s unique character and disregard community input in our neighborhood’s growth.”

Van Capelle mentioned that support for the group has grown beyond the High Line area, encompassing all of New York City.

Central Opposition to Wynn NYC Casino

The opposition by Protect the High Line towards the Related/Wynn casino project is primarily based on two main issues. Firstly, they are concerned that the proposed towers, including one carrying the Wynn name, would obstruct views of the High Line.

Secondly, the group argues that Related is not upholding a 2009 agreement made with the city. The agreement stipulated the construction of 3,454 to 5,700 housing units on the site, but the current proposal with the casino only includes 1,500 units. Some critics believe that the 2009 agreement offered a better solution as it allowed for more housing without compromising the High Line’s iconic views.

“The Protect the High Line campaign advocates for development that adheres to the 2009 rezoning agreement, preserves the park’s integrity, and focuses on public benefits, including commitments to affordable housing,” said the group in a recent press release. “Moving forward, the campaign will continue to involve stakeholders, amplify community voices, and push for a planning process that prioritizes public needs.”

Protect the High Line conducted a poll on the issue, revealing that a majority of West Side residents are against having a casino in their neighborhood.

Wynn NYC Casino Draws Support, Too

Similar to many other casino proposals in the New York City area, the Related/Wynn project has both opponents and proponents.

While community groups and local politicians oppose the casino, some supporters believe it could generate significant revenue to assist the homeless in the area. Labor groups also see potential for substantial job creation.

Earlier this year, Related warned that without the casino component, major development at the Western Rail Yards is unlikely to proceed.
