The phase one Live! Casino Virginia in Petersburg is set to launch on January 22, 2026, pending final regulatory endorsement, marking a significant milestone for the city toward a permanent $1.4 billion casino and hotel facility projected for completion in 2027.

This development was announced by The Cordish Companies from Baltimore and Bruce Smith Enterprise based in Virginia Beach, who are spearheading the initiative on a 100-acre plot located off Interstate 95 at Exit 48B. Construction on the full-fledged resort commenced in March.

“After extensive planning, we are excited to see this dream materialize,” stated Rob Norton, President of Cordish Gaming Group. “The launch of Live! Casino Virginia will provide Central Virginia with an extraordinary venue—the region’s inaugural large-scale casino equipped with the thrilling ambiance of Vegas-style slot machines, interactive table games, and the unique excitement that Live! offers.”

The temporary venue is anticipated to create approximately 500 jobs, including around 100 dealers for table games, as recruitment efforts continue ahead of the opening. Penny Parayo, Senior VP and General Manager of the property, stated that the team is diligently preparing. “We are working tirelessly around the clock to warmly welcome guests for the first time in January,” she added.

Initially, developers projected to open the temporary casino by late 2025, but this schedule was adjusted due to the delay in obtaining regulatory approval from the Virginia Lottery before year-end. The January opening date signifies our confidence in timely approvals.

This 75,000-square-foot temporary casino will boast over 900 slot machines, more than 30 table games, a bar, and a fast-casual dining option, alongside more than 1,000 parking spaces. This temporary facility will operate until the permanent establishment is completed in 2027.

The larger venue will cover 445,000 square feet and feature 1,600 slot machines, over 60 table games, a 200-room hotel offering suites, a sportsbook, nearly 20 dining and beverage options, and over 70,000 square feet dedicated to conventions and entertainment. Developers anticipate that the complete resort will generate approximately 1,400 jobs.

Bruce Smith, Founder of Bruce Smith Enterprise, emphasized the site’s accessibility via the interstate enhances its attractiveness. “Historically, travelers have merely passed this area in favor of other attractions. Starting Jan. 22, guests will choose to visit here as a key destination,” he commented.

Petersburg residents sanctioned the casino through a referendum in November 2024, receiving over 80 percent support. This decision followed several years of legislative efforts to introduce a casino to the area, which gained momentum after Richmond residents twice turned down a separate casino venture.

“The influence of Live! Casino Virginia on Petersburg is monumental,” remarked Mayor Sam Parham. “This temporary setup, and subsequently the permanent resort, will revolutionize the region, shaping the future of our city for generations. This marks just the beginning of an exciting chapter ahead.”

Economic predictions indicate that once fully operational, the resort could generate around $204 million annually for Petersburg, contributing an estimated $2.8 billion within its first decade, positioning it as the most significant single revenue source in the city’s history. Additionally, the 94-acre site is expected to spur further commercial development.
