A police officer was attacked by a civilian during a significant crowd incident on the Las Vegas Strip early Sunday morning, as detailed in newly released court documents.
The “disorderly crowd” gathered not in front of Paris Las Vegas, as previously mentioned by Casino.org, but near the entrance of Planet Hollywood, according to court documents. Police responded to disruption reports around 12:30 a.m., during which “multiple individuals” threw bottles and resisted orders to vacate the area.
Suspect Tased
Law enforcement attempted to apprehend those involved. Officer M. Newson, while attempting to make an arrest, was unexpectedly placed in a chokehold by a man named Jose Aviles from California, as stated in the report.
“One individual approached me from behind and applied what I identified as a rear-naked chokehold while I was still engaged with the original subject,” Newson reported.
Another officer managed to separate Aviles, who persisted in his resistance and was ultimately subdued with a Taser before being taken into custody. Notably, records indicate it was Aviles’ birthday.
The precise cause of the disturbance remains uncertain. Police indicated in a statement that the crowd had assembled to witness “a performance,” though details were lacking.
Strong Police Response
Eyewitness accounts mentioned a significant police presence on the Strip, with estimates suggesting that nearly 100 police vehicles were deployed. Footage captured a police helicopter overhead, spotlighting the area as officers gathered.
Initially, police reported 11 arrests and noted that one officer had been struck by an object. However, jail records suggest Aviles is the sole individual formally booked related to this incident.
He was taken to Clark County Detention Center, where he posted bail and was subsequently released. Fortunately, police reported no injuries from the event.
