In a shocking incident, Edgar Paez, the president of Tigres FC, was brutally murdered following the team’s 3-2 defeat to Atlético FC. Speculation suggests that the motive behind the attack may be related to unpaid sports betting debts.
Paez, who had served as the club’s president for several years, was attacked by two hitmen on a motorcycle while leaving the stadium with his family. He sustained fatal injuries and later succumbed to them in the hospital. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it has raised suspicions of connections to sports betting due to Tigres FC’s recent poor performance.
Possible Links to Sports Betting
While there is no concrete evidence linking Paez to sports betting, two presidents of Colombian soccer clubs have claimed that he had involvement in such activities. Before becoming president of Tigres FC, Paez was a detective for a state security agency, and during his time at another club, there were allegations of money from drug trafficking entering the organization.
In 2010, the club was involved in a money laundering scheme connected to a criminal group engaged in drug operations. Several members of the group have since been killed in gang-related incidents, further complicating the investigation into Paez’s murder.
Ongoing Investigation
Those close to Paez deny any involvement in illegal activities and assert that he was a respected member of the community and soccer ecosystem. The authorities have initiated an investigation and are utilizing public surveillance footage to identify the perpetrators. Progress has already been made in identifying the motorcycle used in the attack, and it is hoped that the culprits will be apprehended soon.
