- Emergency evacuation of Potawatomi Casino occurred on Monday due to a fire incident
- The fire ignited in an HVAC unit located on the rooftop
- Hotel operations remained unaffected by the fire
Just before noon local time, the gaming area of the Potawatomi Casino Hotel in downtown Milwaukee was evacuated following a fire alert.

Managed by the Forest County Potawatomi Community, the casino initiated the evacuation process shortly before noon. Milwaukee Fire Department officials confirmed the fire was under control within an hour of the incident.
The blaze started from an HVAC unit on the roof, releasing a large plume of black smoke visible above the facility.
“A malfunction in our boiler system caused the fire,” stated the Potawatomi Casino via social media. “The entire building is being evacuated. Please note that we are on private property and this is an active situation.”
Fortunately, the fire did not disrupt the operations of the Potawatomi Casino Hotel’s 500 guest rooms and suites, which remained inhabited throughout the incident. Additionally, most resort activities were not affected.
Media Restricted
The fire incident occurred the day after Easter, when many individuals were still enjoying the holiday weekend. The Native American casino, equipped with approximately 3,000 slot machines, 60 live dealer table games, bingo halls, poker rooms, and a sportsbook, experienced unusually high traffic for a Monday.
After reports of the fire emerged, local media converged on the site, but resort officials swiftly instructed reporters to evacuate the premises.
Ben Jordan, a reporter from TMJ4, an NBC News affiliate, was asked to relocate while he was conducting a live interview with a witness.
“I’m sorry, but you’re on private property. I need you to leave,” a casino representative informed Jordan and a nearby witness. “You need to go across Canal Street.”
By 2:45 PM CDT, the Potawatomi Casino had not yet reopened.
In the fiscal year of 2024-25, tribal casinos in Wisconsin reported a gross gaming revenue exceeding $1.37 billion, representing a 5% increase from the previous year. Wisconsin has Class III gaming agreements with 11 federally recognized tribes, which manage a total of 24 gaming facilities.
2025 Casino Flood Incident
Less than a year ago, the Potawatomi Casino Hotel and the Milwaukee area experienced what meteorologists referred to as a “once in a thousand years” flood. Over a span of 48 hours, the city received nearly 10 inches of rainfall on August 9-10.
The severe flooding inflicted significant damage to numerous vehicles parked at the casino’s garage, with many vehicles totaled.
The casino’s insurance provider denied claims, arguing that the floods constituted an “act of nature.” Vehicle owners lacking comprehensive coverage, which typically covers damages unrelated to collisions, incurred heavy financial burdens for repairs or replacements.
