  • Powerball jackpot rolls over for the 40th time after Monday’s draw failed to produce a winner
  • The estimated jackpot for the Dec. 10 Powerball drawing is $930 million

For the past 40 drawings, the Powerball jackpot has evaded all players.

The latest Powerball streak has propelled the jackpot to approximately $930 million for the drawing on Wednesday, December 10. The cash payout option is estimated at $429 million, not accounting for federal and state taxes.

On Monday, a single ticket matched all five white balls, narrowly missing the jackpot by not matching the red Powerball. That ticket also did not include the optional $1 Power Play, which would have increased the prize to $2 million.

The probability of matching the five white balls out of 69 is about one in 11.7 million. The winning numbers from Monday were 8, 32, 52, 56, 64, and the Powerball was 23, with a Power Play of 2X.

Powerball Approaches the $1 Billion Mark (Again)

The $930 million Powerball jackpot is now the seventh-largest in the game’s history, which began in April 1992.

To secure a position among the top five prizes, it must continue to roll over until it surpasses the $1.08 billion jackpot won by a single ticket in California in July 2023. The top five prize tier starts at $1.326 billion.

The largest Powerball jackpot ever awarded was more than $2 billion, claimed by Edwin Castro in November 2022. The highest Mega Millions jackpot was $1.6 billion, won in August 2023.

Potential Back-to-Back Billion Dollar Wins?

Powerball is nearing historic territory, potentially being the first lottery in the world to achieve consecutive jackpot wins exceeding $1 billion.

The current jackpot streak started in September, following a draw on September 6 when two tickets from Missouri and Texas shared a $1.787 billion prize. If the jackpot remains unclaimed after Wednesday’s draw, it will likely reach ten digits.

Interest in Powerball has waned during this jackpot cycle. The previous run reached a staggering $1.787 billion over 42 draws. Wednesday will mark the 41st draw in this cycle, and the current top prize is “only” $930 million, about 52% of the previous jackpot amount.

Winners from the September Powerball Drawing

The winning tickets from the $1.787 billion jackpot have already been redeemed. Both states allow anonymous claims.

In Texas, a trust received its payout as a cash award totaling $410,324,470.28.

“We resonate deeply with the values of Texas. Our commitment is to family and faith, and this is a moment that brings us immense gratitude. We plan to enjoy this blessing and share it with those who enrich our lives. We request privacy as we transition into this new chapter as a family. God bless Texas,” a representative from the trust stated to the Texas Lottery.

In Missouri, a married individual was the lucky winner, also opting for the one-time cash option of $410.3 million.

“I’m just going to take a year to focus on myself,” the winner remarked. “I enjoy being at home; my ideal day is relaxing and enjoying my own company.”
