PrizePicks, a player in the daily fantasy sports and prediction market sector, has revealed plans to discontinue its Canadian operations in favor of expanding its U.S. presence.

In Ontario’s regulated environment, daily fantasy sports participants must engage within the province’s boundaries, creating hurdles for providers, as larger player pools are essential for their success across varied areas.

Legal Challenges Ahead

In a groundbreaking decision last November, the Ontario Court of Appeal determined that residents could engage in peer-to-peer gameplay, such as online poker and daily fantasy sports, alongside players from outside Canada.

Nonetheless, the Canadian Lottery Coalition, representing provincial gaming entities (including British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation, Loto-Québec, and Atlantic Lottery Corporation), has actively opposed international player liquidity and has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada.

Reports indicate that PrizePicks will cease accepting new deposits for fantasy lineups on March 10. Canadian players will have until April 2 to withdraw leftover funds, with an official shutdown on April 3.

theScore Bet Enters Alberta’s Market

Penn Entertainment’s theScore Bet is the newest player to enter Alberta’s freshly regulated online gaming market, with its launch anticipated this spring or summer.

The company has announced that its online sportsbook is now open for pre-registration in the province of Alberta. This process allows users to download and complete account setup steps in preparation for the market’s official launch.

theScore Bet operates with RG Check accreditation, ensuring responsible gambling practices.

Upcoming Launch in Alberta

Other operators, such as BetMGM, BetRivers, PointsBet Canada, and Betty, have also initiated pre-registration in Alberta.
