Controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby is set to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, as reported by various news outlets on Monday evening.

$90,000 in Bettings

As reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Sorsby “could potentially be the highest-selected supplemental pick in many years.”

This development marks the latest step in Sorsby’s ongoing legal battles regarding his efforts to return to college football, after being deemed ineligible by the NCAA due to gambling accusations. On June 8, a U.S. District Court issued a temporary injunction permitting Sorsby to rejoin the Texas Tech team and prepare for the 2026 season.

Temporary Injunction Details

Throughout his college career at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech, Sorsby reportedly placed bets exceeding $90,000 across various sportsbooks, which included gambling on his own team while he was redshirting with the Indiana Hoosiers.

NCAA regulations prohibit student-athletes from wagering on any NCAA-sanctioned sports, whether collegiate or professional, with potential permanent disqualification if found betting on their own team or competing teams within the same school.

While Sorsby conceded to breaching NCAA guidelines, he insisted he never bet on games in which he participated.

Big 12 Legal Challenge

Texas Tech’s administration has expressed its support for Sorsby; however, the Big 12 filed a federal lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas against both Texas Tech and the Texas Attorney General, aiming to utilize its bylaws to impose sanctions on Sorsby after several athletic directors opposed Texas Tech last week regarding the U.S. District Court injunction.

The legal action seeks, “a declaration that the First Amendment safeguards the Conference’s authority to enforce its Bylaws against [Texas Tech] in relation to the sports betting activities discussed in this Complaint, especially if the university fields a student-athlete involved in collegiate sports betting,” according to ESPNs reporting.

Today, the Big 12 Board of Directors convened, and the NCAA submitted an emergency motion to suspend the temporary injunction awarded to Sorsby.

NCAA’s Emergency Motion

“The Big 12 has consistently voiced concerns regarding the risks associated with sports wagering and remains dedicated to maintaining the competitive integrity of our conference,” stated a representative from the Big 12 Board of Directors, as reported by On3.

Sorsby had recently completed a 35-day inpatient gambling rehabilitation program, aiming to revitalize his NCAA career.

Texas Tech is heavily invested in Sorsby playing this season, as he was not merely another transfer quarterback. He was a highly sought-after player in the offseason transfer portal, making him one of the priciest transfer acquisitions during the NIL period.

Ranking as a Top Quarterback

His performance from last season at Cincinnati validates this – he threw for approximately 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns, with just five interceptions. Additionally, Sorsby boasts over 1,300 rushing yards in college, establishing himself as a viable dual-threat quarterback.

Reports indicate that Sorsby was set to earn $5 million to play quarterback for Texas Tech this season, with expectations of leading them toward national championship contention.

Upcoming NFL Supplemental Draft

The NFL Supplemental Draft is slated for July. Analysts have projected Sorsby as a Top 5 quarterback prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft.

The supplemental draft caters to players whose college eligibility has shifted due to disciplinary actions, academic issues, or transfers.

If a team selects a player in the 2026 supplemental draft, it forfeits that corresponding pick in the 2027 collegiate draft.

Teams can opt to use a pick that has already been traded. The supplemental draft selection process is determined by a lottery.

Investigating Sorsby’s Background

For instance, the New York Jets possess three first-round picks in 2027 – their own (top tier, due to winning fewer than six games last season), and two acquired through trades with the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts (both in the second tier), with an interest in selecting a quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns have reportedly conducted preliminary research on Sorsby.

“Regarding the situation he has created, we’re all aware of it,” Browns head coach Todd Monken told reporters last week. “He’s responsible for his circumstances, and we’ve observed other athletes being banned for life from professional sports.”

Quarterback Development Prospects

“Nonetheless, from my perspective, it’s quite a challenging angle to pursue him as your franchise quarterback if he’s ever eligible to play in the NFL,” Monken added.

Most NFL analysts categorize Sorsby as a quarterback likely to be picked in the fourth or fifth round of the NFL Draft – showcasing considerable talent with potential but necessitating additional development, especially when compared to an instant prospect like the Vegas Raiders’ Fernando Mendoza, selected first overall in April and anticipated to be an NFL starter next season.
