Residents of Nevada are having difficulty spelling the word ‘seizure,’ according to Google Trends.

Residents in Nevada, like in all other states, use Google for various purposes, including quick spell checks. A recent report shows that Nevadans primarily searched on Google to learn the correct spelling of the word “seizure.”

Nevada boasts more casinos and gaming venues than any other state. The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) reported in October that 315 locations held nonrestricted gaming licenses, permitting them to operate slots and gaming machines.

Although most Nevadans are likely familiar with the spelling of common gaming terms, such as baccarat, the most misspelled casino table game, residents of the Silver State faced challenges in spelling “seizure” in 2024. Essay Hub researchers noted that “seizure” topped the list as the most Googled word in Nevada followed by the prompt “How do you spell…,” in 2024.

An Essay Hub spokesperson informed Casino.org, “This data highlighted some commonly misspelled words that you’d expect to see. For example, business and dessert, which can be confusing because of the number of S’s.”

In addition to the spelling struggles related to “seizure” in Nevada, individuals in Idaho and West Virginia faced challenges spelling their own states, as evidenced by Idaho and West Virginia being the most searched “How do you spell…” terms in those respective states.

Seizure Statistics

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a seizure is a sudden, temporary alteration in behavior, movement, and/or consciousness caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Common symptoms include uncontrolled shaking, staring into space, stiffness, twitching, limpness, loss of consciousness, a convulsion, and unusual sensations or thoughts.

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that results in seizures. The Nevada Epilepsy Foundation reports that over 31,000 people in the state live with the condition.

By utilizing Google Trends, researchers at Essay Hub gathered data on “how do you spell” words. The platform examines the top search queries on Google across different regions and languages, including within each U.S. state.

The Essay Hub spokesperson commented on the compilation, “Many of the words on the list are certainly challenging and may have different variations, so double-checking and ensuring you have the correct spelling in documents is paramount.”

Nevada has an epilepsy rate per 100,000 people higher than the national average, ranging between 1,047 to 1,098. Mississippi has the highest epilepsy rate per 100,000 people at 1,194, while Utah has the lowest at 960.

State Spell Checks

Essay Hub’s findings indicate that most states had understandable most-googled “how do you spell” words or terms due to their level of difficulty.

In New Jersey, the spelling of “thousand” was the most searched term, while in Pennsylvania, residents frequently sought assistance from Google for the spelling of “reimbursement.” In one instance in August, Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia misspelled Bruce Springsteen’s name as “Springstein.”

The words “beautiful” and “beautifully” topped the list in three states: Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota, respectively. Some of the more peculiar most-searched words include “boutonniere” in Utah, “multiplication” in North Carolina, “prank” in Virginia, and “paparazzi” in Minnesota. The term “paparazzi” gained prominence in Minnesota in 2024 after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.

Alaskans reportedly struggled with the spelling of “cheese,” Californians with “tomato,” and New Mexicans with “bologna.”
