A Lawsuit Challenges Legality of Rockingham County Casino Resort Zoning Process
The Rockingham County Board of Commissioners is facing a lawsuit alleging improper procedures in rezoning land for a potential casino resort. The suit claims that the county officials did not follow legal requirements and conspired with a commercial real estate developer, The Cordish Companies, to push for the casino against community wishes.
Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger attempted to garner support to legalize casinos in Rockingham, Anson, and Nash counties. However, the proposal did not gain sufficient backing. Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore are expected to renew their casino push next year.
The lawsuit also alleges links between Cordish executives and Berger through political donations. Despite the legal challenge, the commissioners maintain that they followed all necessary procedures and consider the lawsuit meritless.
County Official Defends Zoning Decision
The commissioners argue that the rezoned property, located along the future Interstate 73, has been designated for future growth for many years. They assert that they complied with rezoning rules, unified development ordinances, and took public input into account before approving the request.
Rockingham County’s casino plans are currently on hold due to lack of support. However, online sports betting, which was authorized earlier this year, is set to launch early next year. State regulators are finalizing the necessary regulations for the expanded gaming offerings.
