Jacky Rosen has surged ahead in the tight race for Nevada’s Senate seat against challenger Sam Brown.
As of early Thursday, Rosen, the Democratic incumbent, led Brown, R, by 12,699 votes according to figures released by the Associated Press.
Rosen held a 47.6% share of the votes, totaling 644,471, as of Thursday morning. Brown garnered 46.7% of the votes. They amounted to 631,772.
The fresh tallies surfaced after the counting of around 55,000 votes, encompassing mail-in ballots and those deposited at polling stations on Election Day.
Increased Voting
It is estimated that several thousand additional ballots might still be tabulated in the contest, a Las Vegas TV station, KLAS, reported. These include votes cast in Clark and Washoe counties. If mail-in ballots carried a postmark by Election Day, they will be included in the tally if received before Saturday.
On Wednesday, Brown, a former Army officer, experienced a surge when more votes were counted from Nye County, known for its Republican leanings. Conversely, Rosen’s counts received a boost from Washoe County, which has a significant Democratic presence.
Owing to the tight race, neither candidate declared victory while addressing supporters on Tuesday night after the polls closed.
As of Thursday morning, projections indicated a win for Rosen against Brown, as per Decision Desk HQ, The Hill reported.
Signature Issues
Another factor affecting the vote count involves around 12,736 mail-in ballots, as of Wednesday, from various parts of Nevada that require signature verification before being tallied. If the voters can be contacted to rectify the matter, they have until November 12 to confirm the signature.
If Brown emerges victorious, it would bolster the impending Republican dominance in the US Senate. Presently, the Republicans lead with 52 seats compared to 44 for the Democrats, based on the latest AP projections.
Not all Senate races have been formally decided. In some of Tuesday’s Senate contests, the Republican contenders benefited from the election win of former President Donald Trump, R, over Vice President Kamala Harris, D.
Berkley Ahead in Vegas Mayoral Race
As of Wednesday, former US Rep. Shelley Berkley, D, was reportedly in the lead in the hotly contested race for the next mayor of Las Vegas.
She secured over 50% of the total votes against her rival, Councilwoman Victoria Seaman, R.
Berkley garnered approximately 52.8% of the votes, giving her a 12,806-vote edge, as per a report by Las Vegas TV station KSNV on Wednesday.
The eventual winner will succeed the husband-wife duo of Oscar and Carolyn Goodman, who jointly held the mayorship for 25 years.
