A devastating barn fire at the Saratoga Casino Hotel racetrack in Upstate New York has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 17 horses.

A joint statement from the Saratoga Casino Hotel and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department revealed that the fire broke out in a barn on the backstretch of the harness racetrack around 2:30 am local time on June 16.
The barn housed 18 horses at the time of the incident, with confirmation that all but one have perished.
Initially, a report from the casino and fire department stated that only seven horses had died; however, this number rose as daylight revealed the full extent of the tragedy.
Brave firefighters tirelessly fought to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent structures. The barn was located at 25 Nelson Avenue, positioned between the Saratoga Standardbred harness oval and the historic Saratoga Race Course, known for its Thoroughbred races.
Ongoing Investigation
At this time, the origin of the barn fire has not been established.
According to the casino’s statement, appropriate authorities will investigate the cause. Harness racing events at Saratoga have been canceled for that day.
Our thoughts go out to the horse owners, trainers, caretakers, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss. We are thankful for the quick response from our security, the staff from the New York Racing Association, and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, whose actions helped save many horses and ensured the safety of individuals on the site,” stated John Matarazzo, director of racing operations at Saratoga Casino Hotel.
The Saratoga Casino Hotel harness racetrack originally opened its doors in June 1941, while the nearby Saratoga Race Course, a venue for Thoroughbred racing, has an even longer history.
The Saratoga Race Course opened in August 1863, during the Civil War, and is recognized as one of the oldest major sports venues in the United States and the fourth-oldest horse racetrack overall. The facility is operated by NYRA.
Saratoga Casino Hotel features approximately 1,200 video lottery machines and electronic table games, generating a gross gaming revenue of $14.6 million last month.
Saratoga Casino Holdings, the parent company operating Saratoga Casino Hotel and the accompanying racetrack, has recently inaugurated the Happy Valley Casino in State College, Pennsylvania.
Recent Casino Fires in New York
In 2024, another video lottery facility, Tioga Downs Casino Resort, experienced a tragic barn fire that claimed 30 horses.
In that incident at Tioga Downs, an individual was found guilty of arson; 33-year-old Boyd Fenton from Athens, Pennsylvania, admitted to third-degree arson, second-degree assault, and 30 counts of animal cruelty.
Fenton disclosed that he was under the influence of drugs and reportedly hallucinating at the time he set fire to the barn. He was sentenced to 7 to 15 years in a New York State prison, which is the maximum penalty possible.
