An Arizona man, involved in an unusual fake kidnapping scheme, is currently being pursued by law enforcement after fleeing prior to his sentencing.

Mark Michael Ellis, 33, from Prescott, Arizona, was found guilty by a Yavapai County jury on May 7 for his involvement in a purported kidnapping that included false ransom requests and claims that he had been abducted by a drug cartel.
In January 2025, Ellis reportedly sent a series of texts asserting that cartel members were holding him captive, demanding over $17,000 to be wired to his account.
He even conducted a FaceTime call with his boss while claiming to be trapped in a basement; however, investigators later uncovered that the location was actually his garage, where his girlfriend was unaware of his deceit.
Drug-Related Evidence
Upon learning of the situation, Ellis’s employer alerted law enforcement, leading to an investigation by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. It was revealed later that he had accrued substantial gambling debts, which prompted him to fabricate the kidnapping narrative.
The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office reported that Ellis lost upwards of $15,000 due to gambling prior to this incident.
During the investigation, authorities also found drug paraphernalia and Ellis confessed to methamphetamine usage around the time of the alleged hoax.
“My office is committed to rigorously prosecuting those who attempt to deceive others or exploit someone else’s goodwill,” stated Dennis McGrane, Yavapai County’s prosecutor.
“If Mr. Ellis had taken accountability for his issues with drugs and gambling and sought help, he wouldn’t be in this predicament,” McGrane further emphasized. “I urge anyone struggling with addiction to seek assistance before it disrupts your life and harms your loved ones.”
Arrest Warrant Issued
Ellis was convicted on multiple counts, including attempted fraud and attempted theft, but the case took a sudden turn when he vanished before his sentencing, creating a cloud of uncertainty regarding his whereabouts. A warrant for his arrest has since been issued.
The attorney’s office indicated that a new sentencing date will be scheduled once he is apprehended. Meanwhile, law enforcement is seeking public assistance in locating him.
