The forthcoming third season of HBO’s “The White Lotus” is set to take place in Thailand. With the popular series choosing Thailand as its backdrop, a leading casino operator in Asia believes that it will significantly boost tourism to the country.
Thailand’s government is in the final stages of legalizing casino gambling. It is anticipated that five integrated resorts (IRs) will be legalized, aiming to boost the country’s tourism and entertainment sector.
Industry experts project that a developed casino industry in Thailand could bring in over $9 billion in annual gross gaming revenue. Bangkok is likely to host two IRs, with additional resorts planned for Pattaya, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.
Melco Resorts, a prominent casino licensee in Macau, has shown interest in expanding into Thailand. The casino operator, known for its City of Dreams property, has established a presence in Thailand and is ready to explore new opportunities.
Thailand’s Allure
Lawrence Ho, the CEO of Melco Resorts and son of the legendary Stanley Ho, is optimistic about the gaming market in Southeast Asia. During a recent conference in Thailand, he expressed his belief that “The White Lotus” will attract global attention to Thailand as a top leisure destination.
Drawing parallels to the impact of HBO’s “Deadwood” series on South Dakota, Ho expects “The White Lotus” to have a similar effect on Thailand. The filming of the third season took place at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui in Surat Thani.
Melco is eagerly awaiting the final regulations before making a bid for a gaming license in Thailand.

Although Thailand previously faced opposition to legalizing casinos, recent shifts in attitudes could lead to a new era for the country’s leisure and tourism industry.
Currently, legal gambling in Thailand is limited to a state lottery and horse racing, while underground betting remains prevalent.
Missed Opportunity in Japan
Melco Resorts had been eyeing the Japanese gaming market after the country authorized the development of integrated resorts. Despite initial enthusiasm from major casino operators, delays and the pandemic led to many companies withdrawing from Japan.

While MGM is moving forward with its Japan project, Melco and others have shifted their focus to emerging opportunities in Thailand and elsewhere.
