Senators Advocate for a Tobacco-Style Prohibition on Gaming Advertisements

The lawmaker driving Alberta’s regulated iGaming sector, which may closely resemble Ontario’s model, is one of 14 provincial officials facing potential recall by the electorate.

Dale Nally, representing the Morinville-St. Albert constituency, is affiliated with the governing United Conservative Party led by Premier Danielle Smith, serving as Minister of Service Alberta and overseeing Red Tape Reduction.

Recently, there has been a surge in recall initiatives targeting UCP members, which may alter the province’s political landscape. The UCP currently holds 49 seats in the legislature, granting them a majority, while the Alberta New Democratic Party holds 38 seats.

While the process for recalling the 14 officials is lengthy, it raises questions about the underlying issues leading to this populist movement. Alberta and British Columbia are the only Canadian provinces that permit the recall of elected officials.

Nally noted during his appearance at the Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto in June that the new Alberta iGaming market is anticipated to launch “early next year.” The implications of these recall efforts on that timeline remain uncertain.

Casino.org reached out to Nally’s office for a statement regarding these developments but has yet to receive a response.

Canadian Senators Urge for Sports Betting Ad Restrictions

Recently, two Canadian Senators submitted a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging the government to instruct the CRTC to prohibit all advertisements related to sports betting applications and websites.

The correspondence from Senators Percy Downe of Charlottetown and Marty Deacon of Waterloo highlights concerns that individuals of all ages are being negatively affected by the pervasive advertisements that have transformed their devices into “a pocket-sized casino.”

Senator Deacon has already introduced legislation proposing a new regulatory framework for sports betting advertising currently progressing through the House of Commons.

“While it’s impossible to eliminate human vulnerabilities, we can legislate against exploitation,” Senator Downe stated.

Ontario has already amended its advertising regulations by prohibiting sports celebrities from appearing in gambling promotional materials, with the sole exception being responsible gambling advertisements.

PENN Entertainment Restructures Esports Division

According to reports from Esports Insider, theScore’s esports division in Toronto has recently experienced significant layoffs.

PENN Entertainment announced a strategic pivot a few weeks ago, concluding its partnership with ESPN, and redirecting its focus to theScore brand in the U.S. sports betting sector commencing December 1. The company is also intensifying its efforts in sports betting and online casino operations in Ontario, with plans to enter Alberta’s regulated market in 2026.

Sources indicate that several former employees have publicly confirmed their layoffs on social media. The esports division was established in 2015, prior to PENN’s acquisition of theScore in 2021.

Casino.org has reached out to a PENN spokesperson for confirmation regarding the layoffs but has not received a reply.

DraftKings Introduces Spanish-Language Features

DraftKings announced the launch of a Spanish-language option within its sportsbook and casino app, which is initially available to select users in the U.S. and Ontario. A wider rollout is anticipated in the coming weeks.

Users whose mobile devices are set to Spanish will automatically access the DraftKings app in Spanish after an update.

“Integrating Spanish language functionality into our premier product enhances the user experience and broadens our potential market,” stated Corey Gottlieb, Chief Product Officer at DraftKings. “This aligns with our objective to provide the most authentic, tailored experience for our users.”
