“These situations happen when you’re an offensive lineman, and suddenly you find yourself fielding questions about the third-string quarterback after a grueling practice on a Thursday. It’s frustrating.
A recent peculiar interview in which Sanders mimed his responses after Gabriel was named the Browns’ starting quarterback has prompted criticism from various NFL media outlets. This behavior may be what Schwartz refers to when mentioning Sanders’ tendency to attract attention to himself.
“I believe it’s accurate to say that he actively seeks attention. He certainly embraces it, along with the financial rewards he gained during college and continues to gain now.
“When you’re a backup or a third-string player and bring this level of attention into the team—an attention that can be argued he has courted through his marketing approach and that of his father, as well as his public persona—it has its challenges.
“In the NFL, this kind of behavior can only be tolerated to a point if you’re not delivering results on the field. We’ll see if he gets an opportunity. Based on Gabriel’s performance in the past two weeks, I believe he will get that chance, and it will be intriguing to see how he handles it. Hopefully, he is well-prepared.”
