- Patron claims exploding shower door resulted in serious injuries
- Lawsuit alleges that casino neglected to inspect or maintain glass door
- Incident underscores significant safety issues regarding breaking shower doors
A trip to a casino hotel on the Mississippi Coast became distressing for a resident of Jackson, Mississippi, after a shower door shattered, embedding glass shards into her skin, according to a newly filed lawsuit.

Katherine Ellis was exiting the shower in her Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast hotel room in Bay St. Louis on February 28 when the glass panel “exploded, or failed catastrophically,” as she pulled it open.
The resulting shattering propelled glass splinters into her body, inflicting injuries across various areas, as depicted in the lawsuit reviewed by The Sun Herald, submitted last week in Hancock County.
Significant Injuries Sustained
Ellis endured injuries including lacerations to her head, face, torso, legs, and thighs. The wounds were severe enough that a companion attempted to halt the bleeding with towels before casino personnel arrived. Two staff members subsequently wrapped her legs in gauze, as stated in the legal complaint.
She was then taken by ambulance to Ochsner Medical Center in Bay St. Louis for medical care, as per the complaint.
While showering at the hospital, she reports removing additional glass fragments from her hair and from her wounds. Her lawsuit also mentions ongoing health issues, including consistent pain and eye irritation, which required consultation with an eye specialist.
Her attorney, Edward Blackmon Jr. of Canton, has filed the lawsuit, claiming that the casino neglected to inspect or maintain the shower door properly. The complaint asserts that the state of the glass posed a perilous situation for patrons.
As of now, Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast has not issued a response to the allegations.
Shower Doors Can Indeed Shatter
Although cases of glass shower doors exploding are uncommon, they do happen. Tempered glass is designed to shatter into smaller pieces rather than large sharp shards, yet failures can occur unexpectedly under certain circumstances.
Approximately 500 individuals each year visit emergency rooms due to injuries from shattering shower doors, as indicated by consumer safety statistics. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented numerous complaints linked to these incidents.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and lost wages, alongside claims of lasting scars and disfigurement. It also requests punitive damages if justified, as well as coverage of legal fees.
