- Chef “Gigi” Rovito implicated in threatening gambling debtors amid federal charges
- Burr Ridge mayor defends Rovito despite alleged connections to organized crime
- FBI investigations reveal extensive illegal gambling networks linked to suburban eateries
One of the individuals indicted last week in relation to a large illegal gambling operation in Northwest Indiana is known as “quasi-famous” social media chef with suspected affiliations to the Chicago Outfit.

Federal court documents reveal that when tasked with intimidating a gambler who owed money to the operation, chef Filippo “Gigi” Rovito reportedly threatened to “knock [the victim’s] lights out and shove his head into a [gaming] machine.”
However, Gary Grasso, the mayor of Burr Ridge, Illinois, where Rovito operates Capri Ristorante, continues to support the chef and alleged enforcer, describing him to NBC 5 Chicago as “an exemplary citizen in both corporate and residential spaces” who boasts “a YouTube following of approximately 250,000.”
This endorsement may be influenced by Grasso’s admiration for Capri; the restaurant has even crafted a dish in his name, “Linguini alla Mayor Grasso,” which features “fresh tomato sauce and basil, drizzled with olive oil, and topped with fresh ricotta.”
Operation Porterhouse Parlay
Rovito was one of 22 individuals arrested during synchronized FBI raids on April 29, following a protracted investigation known as “Operation Porterhouse Parlay,” believed to have unveiled connections between illegal gambling ventures and restaurant operations throughout Northwest Indiana and suburban Chicago.
The leaders of this group are alleged to be James “Jimmy the Greek” Gerodemos and “Dean Gem” Gialamas, who prosecutors claim utilized businesses such as Gino’s Steak House in Merrillville and Paragon restaurant in Hobart as operational centers and meeting venues.
Federal authorities argue that this organization generated millions through unlawful sports betting, video gambling, and loansharking, employing intimidation and violence—or the threat thereof—to collect debts.
Avoiding the Mob Tag
In the world of social media, Rovito is celebrated for his lively cooking demonstrations, extravagant Italian meals, and a celebrity-like brand associated with his restaurant. Yet, legal documents depict him as a reliable associate, ready to enforce collections when gamblers fell short.
While the charges suggest that this was a criminal network led by Greek Americans and carefully refrain from using terms like “Mafia”, court records obtained by NBC hint at Rovito and the other indicted individuals having historical connections to organized crime gambling operations.
Rovito faces serious charges including illegal gambling conspiracy, extortionate debt collection, and money laundering.
After posting a secured bond of $1 million, Rovito has been released from federal custody and is currently under home confinement with electronic monitoring, awaiting his trial.
