As reported by Sphere Entertainment Co. (NYSE: SPHR), its innovative adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” has achieved remarkable financial success, with over $130 million generated from 1 million tickets sold by October 17, just seven weeks post its premiere on August 28.

On September 15, the company revealed it had sold 500,000 tickets, accumulating $65 million, indicating a consistent daily revenue of approximately $2 million.
Following this positive news, shares of SPHR saw a significant rise, with the stock increasing by 5.5% to $66.54 on Tuesday, building on a 7.5% surge on Monday. Year-to-date, SPHR has climbed 56.5%, significantly eclipsing the S&P 500 growth of 14.5%.
Embarking on a Journey to See the Wizard
Despite the estimated production cost of $100 million appearing risky, “The Wizard of Oz” has proven to be a great investment. (According to analysts at Wolfe Research, the production may reach over $500 million in revenue by next year.)
Sustained demand for the show could indeed transform the company’s financial landscape.
While Sphere Entertainment has not disclosed its total debt in the latest filings, preliminary reports from Bloomberg and Reuters suggested a debt around $1.8 billion, primarily linked to the $2.3 billion investment in construction and tech infrastructure. Operating expenses were projected to be approximately $20 million quarterly in 2024, but recent profitability indicates that the financial outlook for the venue is improving.
There is significant reason to be optimistic about continued demand for this production, considering it is exclusively showing on a single screen worldwide and is appealing to the vast audience of “Wizard of Oz” enthusiasts who have yet to experience it.
The 75-minute performance — shortened by 20 minutes from the 1939 classic to accommodate as many as eight screenings a day — was crafted using cutting-edge AI and CG technology to fit Sphere’s 160,000-square-foot wraparound LED display, the largest of its kind globally.
The production offers an immersive experience that includes wind, lighting effects, customized scents, and haptic seat feedback.
“The Wizard of Oz” at the Las Vegas Sphere runs multiple shows daily. The most affordable tickets ($129-$137) are available for morning and afternoon weekday shows, while evening tickets range from $170-$182. Tickets can be purchased directly from the Sphere website.
