Atlantic City’s Ocean Casino Resort is back in the news after 52 valets recently decided to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Union officials described the vote as “overwhelmingly” in favor of the association with the well-known labor organization.
Leaders of Teamsters Local 331 are set to negotiate a contract for the new members and praised the workers for their decision to join. Among the top priorities for the union members are achieving higher wages, improved benefits, job security, and a safer working environment.
An Ocean Casino valet cashier, Regina Ceballos, spoke out, explaining that the move to join the Teamsters was due to the desire for more respect and a voice in decision-making processes. Tommy Blitsch, director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, also weighed in, stating that the valets are prepared to fight for their benefits and protections. Teamsters Local 331 represents workers in New Jersey’s Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties. The union currently has over 5K casino employees nationwide.
