Was former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman being merciful or cruel when he agreed to choke out one of his friends to forgive his $5,000 poker debt? We’re not sure.
Weidman recently shared a video on Instagram of an unconventional method to resolve a gambling debt. And it seemed less amusing than Weidman may have thought.
“He lost in poker last night,” Weidman wrote. “It was either pay 5k or get choked unconscious! What do you do?”
As shown in the video, the mixed martial artist wrapped his arms around the neck of his friend, who was not identified by name, and was informed by someone else in the room when consciousness was lost and the debt was forgiven.
Weidman’s friend convulsed upon returning from seeing his grandmother at the end of a long tunnel of light, then smiled, and everyone shared a laugh.
This included those in the comments, some of which were as harsh as Weidman’s loss by second-round TKO to Eryk Anders at UFC 310 in Las Vegas on December 7 in the catchweight division.
“Where was this during your fight?” asked @discountlandxx.
“Come on champ I could do what you couldn’t do last weekend you are so much better than this please retire,” added @kev_bryant_sr.
Weidman, with a 16-8 record in the octagon, has an interest in poker, promoting the World Series of Poker free-to-play app in 2022.
It’s fortunate that he has a Plan B. Because at the post-fight press conference at UFC 310, CEO Dana White suggested that Weidman, 40, along with 36-year-old Anthony Smith and 43-year-old Clay Guida, who were also equally brutalized, “should all retire tonight.”
Weidman has not yet commented on his loss or any potential retirement plans.
