Illegal online gambling in Thailand is making headlines once again as luxury properties valued at over $28 million were seized in a raid. This was reportedly linked to an online gambling network run by an individual known only as Phakphum.
According to reports, Ufa Bet, an online gambling platform, faced allegations of collaborating with another network, Pannarong, to expand operations into neighboring countries. This has since led to the arrest of Pakphum, who had a key role in the illegal gambling website operation.
Pakphum, aged 29, was reportedly involved in overseeing approximately 80 mule accounts utilized for receiving funds from gamblers, involving both migrant workers and Thai nationals. The total funds held in these accounts were reportedly over THB1 billion.
In recent years, Thailand has faced a struggle between its conservative stance on gambling and a push for more progressive gambling sentiments. While traditional forms of gambling are strictly prohibited, the country seems to be moving toward a more open approach to some forms of betting, despite continuing crackdowns on illegal operations.
