The stand-up comedian who recently joked about Puerto Rico at a rally for ex-President Donald Trump is a spokesperson for a major sports betting and online casino operator.
The 2024 election is fast approaching, bringing relief to many tired of the political commercials and disputes. Tony Hinchcliffe sparked controversy with his remarks about Puerto Rico at Trump’s rally in New York City.
Hinchcliffe joked, “There’s a lot going on. Like, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” at the rally.
His comments drew backlash, leading to criticism and backlash against Trump regarding aid to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
With just six days left until the Nov. 5 Election Day, Trump is the frontrunner in betting markets. His odds are at 66% to win, with Harris at 34%.
Sportsbooks have Trump at -180, representing 64% odds, while Harris is at +160, or 38%.
DraftKings Ambassador
Trump likely isn’t pleased with the negative attention stemming from a comedian’s joke at his rally. Hinchcliffe, known for his boundary-pushing comedy, is a pitchman for DraftKings, targeting younger audiences, particularly men.
Hinchcliffe promotes DraftKings on social media, offering sign-up incentives like bonus bets.
He has expressed his love for gambling before performances and has teamed up with DraftKings Sportsbook for this reason.
Reconsidering Partnership
In light of Hinchcliffe’s recent controversial remarks, DraftKings is reevaluating its partnership with the comedian, stating that his comments do not reflect the company’s views.
This is not the first time Hinchcliffe has faced backlash for his comments. His talent agency dropped him in 2021 after making offensive remarks.
Hinchcliffe, however, stands by his comedy, saying he loves Puerto Rico and that his jokes are all in the spirit of humor.
