In Nova Scotia, authorities have formally charged two individuals with 19 offences linked to human trafficking and related financial crimes, which involve over $500,000 channeled through casino operations across three provinces, as reported by the Nova Scotia RCMP.

In-Depth Investigation Spanning Three Years

The Nova Scotia Provincial Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) initiated a comprehensive investigation into sexual trafficking in the province in 2023, which later expanded to include New Brunswick and Ontario.

As the investigation unfolded, financial experts from the Forensic Accounting Management Group (FAMG) became involved, revealing funds being channeled through various casino activities.

“Our primary goal in human trafficking cases is to ensure the safety of victims,” stated Sgt. Jeff MacFarlane from the HTU. “While gathering evidence for legal action, our officers also began connecting victims with essential resources.”

Continued Investigation

On April 10, law enforcement from the HTU, the Nova Scotia Organized Crime unit, and East Hants District RCMP apprehended two suspects linked to the case.

Fedul Cain, aged 49, residing in Porters Lake, NS, is facing 13 charges for human trafficking and financial crimes, which include trafficking in persons, material benefit from sexual services, document manipulation, and laundering illicit proceeds.

Marissa Church, 43, hailing from Chester Basin, NS, was also detained for human trafficking-related offences and laundering illicit funds.

Addressing Human Trafficking and Financial Misconduct

Cain appeared in court on April 13 and is due back today, while Church has been released under specific conditions pending her court date.

“Reducing the impact of human trafficking remains a crucial focus for law enforcement and communities throughout Nova Scotia,” commented Sgt. MacFarlane. “Tackling this issue demands a collective effort, and we applaud the bravery of the victims who came forward, aiding in the dismantling of this trafficking network.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to a statement from the RCMP.
