Recently, two individuals were apprehended for operating an illegal gambling establishment at a barber shop in Indianapolis, Indiana.
According to WXIN, Kesny Mathieu and Maxi Nicolas, also known as Wilner Andre, carried out the illegal operation at the Nice Cut Barbershop.
Between September 2022 and June 2023, they illicitly sold lottery tickets, resulting in charges of corrupt business influence and professional gambling.
Authorities revealed that the duo operated a “borlette” or “Haitian lottery” within the establishment, where numbers were often improperly disclosed and a money transfer service was utilized to compensate the borlette seller.
Undercover police officers were able to purchase borlette tickets for $20 each, and gaming machines were also found on-site.
During a raid, officers discovered several electronic gaming devices, approximately $4,000 in coins and currency, tickets valued at approximately $40,000, an HP laptop, a small printer, notebooks, and ledgers.
Man Found Guilty in Homicide Linked to Gambling
An Indiana man has been found guilty of a homicide connected to gambling. Demaury Haywood now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 85 years.
Haywood, charged with murder and a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm, faces up to 65 years for the murder charge and an additional 20 years for the enhancement.
The victim, Diasha Fitts, was shot and fatally wounded while riding in a car. Prior to the incident, she had been participating in a blackjack/poker game at the local Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge.
During the trial, defense attorney Robert Scremin challenged the testimony of a witness for the prosecution, stating, “You don’t convict someone based on the words of a desperate, lying snitch.”
The driver of the car, Brandon Golden, was the likely intended target of the shooting, as described by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
Devonte Travier, a second defendant in the case, is charged with murder, dealing methamphetamine, resisting law enforcement, and obstruction of justice. His trial is set to begin in March.
