Union workers at Encore Boston Harbor have gone on strike today (Sept. 4) due to stalled contract negotiations with the luxury casino resort.
Representing more than 1,300 employees at the Wynn Resorts property located in Everett, Teamsters Local 25 and Unite Here Local 26 are involved in a variety of roles such as front desk, housekeepers, cooks, servers, bartenders, slot attendants, and warehouse operations.
Encore management has underestimated our labor’s value, resulting in our strike. The workers who make the casino run are essential,” expressed Tommy Blitsch, a Teamsters spokesperson.
“Our hard work contributes to making Encore a top-tier resort that generates significant profits. While we didn’t want a strike, we will not accept a contract that disrespects our labor. We are on strike and will continue until we achieve a fair deal,” added James Atkins, lead gardener and chief steward at Local 25.
Normal Operation at the Resort
A spokesperson from Encore Boston Harbor mentioned to Casino.org that the resort is functioning normally. Hotel reservations are being honored, and the casino is open.
Despite the strike initiated by the unions, Encore Boston Harbor remains open and operational, ready to provide service to our guests as negotiations continue,” said the resort spokesperson.
“Despite our efforts to negotiate an agreement, the unions have opted for a strike. We are committed to finding a fair and financially viable common ground that secures long-term jobs,” as stated in their press release.
Wynn’s Perspective on Union Wages
Union members are demanding assurances for ongoing health care and pensions. They are also requesting a minimum base pay increase to $25 per hour, and $10 per hour raises for all union positions over the next four years, or $2.50 per hour annually until 2030.
Wynn Resorts argues that Encore Boston Harbor union workers already receive generous compensation, with an average of $95,718 in pay and benefits.
“Since its inception, Encore Boston Harbor has been investing in its workforce with competitive wages, attractive benefits, and stable careers. We are approaching negotiations in good faith, with transparency and a genuine desire to find a mutually beneficial agreement,” remarked a company spokesperson.
Wynn reports that union pay and benefits have grown almost 37% in the past four years, whereas resort revenue only increased by 1.9%. According to the casino, the wage hikes have exceeded inflation significantly.
“We prioritize job security and economic stability in the long run. Short-term proposals that neglect these factors are not conducive to job preservation,” Wynn emphasized.
