  • A major PSU football community suggests Urban Meyer may be eyeing the Nittany Lions coaching position.
  • Bettors seem unconvinced by this speculation.

Could Urban Meyer be making his way to Penn State? Recently, the PSU rumor mill has been abuzz with claims that the three-time college football champion, recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, is contemplating swapping his Fox Sports microphone for the head coach role at the Nittany Lions.

The Penn State Bank Button Society, a well-known Facebook group that celebrates local banks sponsoring PSU football buttons over the years, frequently shares updates on PSU sports rumors. They recently disclosed that Meyer, who previously coached Ohio State—Penn State’s rival—from 2012 to 2018, and led them to the 2014 national championship, might be interested in taking over from James Franklin.

“We were the first to break the news that US Senator David McCormick and Urban Meyer were not merely chatting about decor for the new White House ballroom. Meyer expressed his desire for the Penn State role,” the society revealed.

“Part of the proposed plan includes Billy Gonzales, current interim head coach in Florida and a former player of Meyer, stepping in as PSU WR coach, alongside Brian Hartline, the current OC at Ohio State and a former Meyer recruit, slated as assistant head coach (or ‘coach in waiting’) and PSU OC,” the society elaborated.

Furthermore, they noted that this potential agreement would feature a five-year deal worth $75 million for Meyer, with Hartline seeing a salary increase from $2 million to $6 million annually.

Bettors Skeptical of Rumor

The prediction marketplace Kalshi is currently offering wagers on who will be the next Penn State head football coach. However, bettors using this platform are not fully convinced that the intel from the Penn State Bank Button Society holds true.

Meyer’s shares are holding steady at just three cents, notably lower than the current frontrunner Jeff Brohm at 29 cents. Interestingly, Brohm’s share value has dipped by 11 cents in the last 24 hours.

Missouri’s head coach Eliah Drinkwitz is next on the list at 21 cents, showing a four-cent gain in the past day, while Hartline stands at 18 cents. However, Hartline’s shares have seen a decline of 11 cents since Thursday.

Other notable candidates include Iowa State’s Matt Campbell at 14 cents, Texas A&M’s Mike Elko at 9 cents, and recently dismissed LSU coach Brian Kelly at 8 cents. Approximately $200K has been wagered on this Penn State coaching event.

A majority of Penn Staters believe that parting ways with Franklin necessitates a headline-grabbing hire, comparable to what Meyer and his associates could undoubtedly provide. The future of PSU Athletic Director Pat Kraft appears contingent on this decision, especially with Beaver Stadium undergoing a $700 million renovation and a lengthy rebuilding of the football program unlikely to be accepted.

Potential Buyout Considerations

When Kraft dismissed Franklin, the decision was accompanied by a hefty $50 million buyout. However, the terms allow Franklin to explore other job opportunities, which could decrease or possibly eliminate this buyout clause.

There are reports suggesting Franklin is close to finalizing a contract to become the new head coach at Virginia Tech. Successfully negotiating his $49 million buyout would likely facilitate Penn State’s pursuit of a high-profile candidate like Meyer.
