The United States Department of Justice has confiscated a web domain associated with a notorious casino complex in Myanmar, previously known as Burma, which has been connected to human trafficking and various scams.

As per federal prosecutors, the domain tickmilleas.com, utilized by scammers operating from Myanmar’s Casino Kosai, masqueraded as a legitimate trading platform, created solely to defraud investors.

US Crackdown on Scams

This action marks another phase of the US government’s aggressive measures to dismantle fraud networks commonly linked to casino operations proliferating in Southeast Asia, particularly in regions with lax law enforcement such as Myanmar and Cambodia.

Many casinos in this locale have shifted to fraudulent activities amid the pandemic when visitors from China and Thailand significantly dwindled due to travel restrictions.

The US Treasury Department links numerous Chinese criminal organizations in the region to human trafficking, revealing that many workers are enticed with the promise of genuine employment but are subsequently coerced into scam operations through violence, debt bondage, or sexual exploitation.

Victims hoping to increase their investments through tickmilleas.com were promised extraordinary returns and shown fabricated account balances while being guided through fake trades by the scammers, according to federal authorities.

The application was accessible for download from Google Play and the App Store until the FBI compelled these platforms to remove it.

Infamous Gambling Center

Casino Kosai is situated in the village of Kyaukhat, mere moments from the Thai border and 25 miles south of Myawaddy, a well-known hub for gambling and scams.

Designated by the Justice Department as the Tai Chang scam compound, it has affiliations with local ethnic militia, the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA), as well as an entity known as Asia International Holding Group Thailand Company Limited (Trans Asia).

Both organizations received sanctions from the US Treasury last month due to ties to organized crime and human trafficking networks.

Pig Butchering Scams

In November 2023, 16 Laotian teenagers were rescued from Casino Kosai. They reported being lured there under false pretenses and compelled to participate in “pig-butchering” scams, which involve initiating fake romantic relationships online to defraud victims of significant amounts of money.

Victims indicated that if they resisted or failed to meet the scammers’ expectations, they faced torture, as reported by Radio Free Asia.

These scams, such as those recounted by victims in the affidavit, generally commence with unsolicited outreach from individuals via dating apps, social media platforms, messaging apps, and text messages,” the DOJ stated.

“These individuals build close virtual relationships with their targets, persuading them to make supposed investments in cryptocurrency, guiding them on how to acquire cryptocurrency, and invest it through fraudulent domains and applications that appear credible,” they added.
