Max Verstappen has made controversial comments about the upcoming race he is expected to win. The three-time Formula 1 champion labeled the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix as “99% show and 1% sporting event,” according to ESPN.

Max Verstappen expressed his lack of enthusiasm for the 17-corner track, describing it with “not very interesting” and “not many corners.” He also mentioned his lack of excitement for street circuits, specifically with the new cars being too heavy.

Adding to the controversy, Verstappen also refused to attend a VIP party at Wynn Las Vegas, an event that F1 president Stefano Domenicali had asked all drivers to attend.

No Verstappen Him

Verstappen’s negative mood may have been affected by the opening ceremonies on Wednesday night. The event included a drone show, fireworks, and musical performances from Keith Urban, Kylie Minogue, and Journey, and the introduction of all 20 drivers in a drizzling rain, which Verstappen described as making him feel like “a clown.”

Verstappen further explained his negative opinion by stating that he always voices his honest views on subjects, whether positive or negative. He also added that his opinion on the Las Vegas race might not matter much, as he is focused on the racing aspect.

Despite his reservations, Verstappen is favored to win his 18th F1 race of the season, which would be his sixth in a row when the race takes place at 10 p.m. Saturday.
