Officials in Herndon, a city in Northern Virginia, have taken steps to halt a proposed casino project in their downtown area, potentially leading to a legal conflict over land management.

The Herndon Planning Commission has passed a resolution to prohibit casino operations in a location adjacent to the town’s Metro line. This follows a proposal from the developer Comstock to construct on valuable downtown property.

As a result of the town leaders’ recent resolution, the project is currently on pause, with future casino development prospects looking increasingly dim.

Previously, local officials considered zoning adjustments that would have allowed a casino only as part of a more extensive mixed-use plan that would include a hotel, retail areas, and conference facilities near the Metro station.

The mayor emphasized that the decision reflects community opinions, with many residents asserting that a casino does not align with the identity of Herndon.

Focus has shifted to the ownership status of the land. The broader concern now revolves around land control. Comstock retains the deed, yet town officials assert they might reclaim the property if the project fails to align with community objectives, potentially leading to legal contention.

This action follows a recent veto by Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger of a bill that would enable casino operations in Fairfax County, including neighboring Tysons, although town leaders claim their efforts pre-date the veto decision.

Mayor Keven LeBlanc informed Patch on Tuesday that the town began seeking to revise its codes back in January to safeguard its community development goals for the area surrounding the Herndon Metro station.

It’s important to note that the Planning Commission’s move isn’t finalized; a formal vote is still required to institute the casino prohibition by the Herndon Town Council.
