Miller’s disqualification is reportedly associated with an alleged game-fixing incident during his time at Temple University playing in the American Athletic Conference the previous season.

Sports Illustrated first reported Miller’s expulsion for Virginia Tech, which was later confirmed by the university.

Virginia Tech stated, “Hysier Miller has been permanently released from the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program due to circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech. There will be no further comment by the university on this matter.”

Originally from Philadelphia, Miller was the top scorer for Temple last season, averaging 15.9 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. Despite Temple’s overall struggles, they achieved a remarkable run in the AAC tournament, winning four consecutive games before losing in the championship game to UAB Blazers.

Sports Betting Investigation

There has been an ongoing investigation into the 2023-24 Temple Owls basketball team by a prominent sports betting integrity monitor.

U.S. Integrity, the sports betting integrity supervisor for AAC, has been monitoring Temple games for suspicious activities related to fraud, match-fixing, and game manipulation.

Sports Illustrated reported that U.S. Integrity started closely monitoring Temple games after detecting suspicious line movements during the previous season.

During Temple’s game against UAB, the line shifted significantly within a day, raising suspicions of game-fixing. Temple’s unexpected loss to UAB also raised concerns, especially after being favored to win in a previous game against Tulsa.

Miller’s performance during the UAB game, where he scored below his average, raised further doubts about the integrity of the matches.

When reports surfaced about U.S. Integrity’s investigation, Temple issued a statement emphasizing their serious approach to the matter.

2024-25 Consequences

Miller was anticipated to be a key player for Virginia Tech this season, aiming to enhance the team’s offensive capabilities.

Head coach Mike Young is determined to lead Virginia Tech to a successful season and potentially to March Madness after a challenging previous year.

Virginia Tech has odds of 250/1 to win the NCAA men’s basketball championship this season.

NCAA rules mandate severe penalties for student-athletes involved in sports betting activities, including permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports.
