In New Hampshire, the owner of a charitable casino, who also has plans to develop a second one, may face a permanent ban from owning any gaming property in the state. The owner, Andy Sanborn, is under investigation for allegedly fraudulently obtaining $844,000 in COVID relief money and spending some of it on personal expenses, including three luxury sports cars. State and federal authorities are conducting inquiries that could result in charges and administrative action. The allegations against Sanborn have raised concerns about the licensing of his current casino and the approval of his planned second casino.

Recently, it was revealed that Sanborn obtained a federal COVID relief loan by providing false information on his application and omitting references to his casino. Casinos were not eligible for these loans. Furthermore, he allegedly used the funds to purchase three race cars, including two Porsches for personal use and a Ferrari as a gift for his wife, who is a state representative. In addition, he allegedly spent relief funds on vehicle services, cash distributions, and expenses related to the planned casino.

The Attorney General’s office is investigating these allegations, and if proven true, the New Hampshire Lottery Commission may revoke Sanborn’s casino license. The impact of these allegations is being evaluated by local officials, and a related inquiry will be conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s office. Sanborn, however, maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the allegations.

Andy Sanborn and his wife Laurie have been operating the Concord Casino since 2018. They also have plans to open a second charitable casino in Concord. However, these plans have faced opposition from local residents, leading to a lawsuit. Laurie Sanborn, who is also involved in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, has recently been appointed chair of a committee to review charitable gaming laws. However, calls have been made to remove her from this position due to the allegations against her husband.

Given the serious charges in the Attorney General’s report, removing Representative Sanborn from positions which directly involve charitable gaming, is the only way to preserve public trust in the oversight of taxpayer dollars.”
