Italy has implemented a unique strategy to crack down on adolescent online gambling and restricted content access. Under the new regulation, Italian minors must have parental control activated on their devices to browse the Internet freely from their mobile phones.

As per the new guidelines, mobile telephone operators are required to block access to certain web pages for users under the age of 18. The prohibited content includes sites with material related to weapons sale, gambling and betting, pornography, and more.

Italian authorities have introduced this “safe browsing” option free of charge to protect adolescent mobile users. However, the new system may not be foolproof as it cannot control social media content or online advertising, where sportsbooks and iGaming platforms are active.

Adolescents trying to circumvent the restriction may use SIM cards registered in their parents’ names. Therefore, the new regulations may not entirely prevent minors from accessing inappropriate materials.
