2 South African casino workers arrested for filing a false robbery claim.
Margaret Ndlovu, 23, and Tadiwa Madzokere, 19, were arrested in the Mpumalanga province for making a fraudulent claim about being robbed and held at gunpoint at a casino near Belfast. Police uncovered that the casino workers were trying to conceal their theft.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said, “Opening a false case can land one behind bars.”
South Africa’s gaming industry revenue totaled $236 million in 2022 and is operated by Sun International, Peermont, and Tsogo Sun.
Deception Established
Mohlala said that through questioning, police determined that the casino workers filed a false report and colluded to give untrue information. He added that they actually received money from the casino and lied to cover their tracks.
Police Commissioner Semakaleng Daphney Manamela warned of the consequences of deceptive schemes involving filing false reports. “Whoever takes a chance to report a false case will be dealt with accordingly,” said Manamela.
Suspects in Custody
Ndlovu and Madzokere are charged with perjury and are in police custody. A perjury conviction in South Africa can result in up to 10 years in federal prison.
According to the US Department of Justice, prisons in South Africa “are places of extreme violence” where assaults on prisoners by guards and other inmates are common and often fatal.
