The MLB trade deadline excitement is reaching a fever pitch, a crucial moment in the season where sportsbooks in Las Vegas are attempting to set odds on potential trades that may or may not occur.

In just a week, MLB rosters may transform significantly, potentially altering pennant and wild-card races. Teams’ odds for winning the World Series could significantly improve, or organizations expected to trade may opt to hold onto their players or even make acquisitions.
The MLB trade deadline is set for August 3. Will the Toronto Blue Jays be buyers or sellers? Are the Milwaukee Brewers planning to acquire another starter? Could the New York Yankees seek additional offense with Aaron Judge sidelined due to a rib injury, and potentially address their catching situation as well?
Speculative Rumors Affect Markets
Evaluating rumors and social media speculation alongside credible reporting from baseball insiders plays a crucial role in shaping betting lines.
Should we take seriously the speculation surrounding a George Springer reunion with the Houston Astros, given their need for a right-handed outfielder, especially with Springer’s recent surge (three home runs, 12 RBIs, a .326 batting average, and a .957 OPS over the last 15 days), as noted by ESPN?
On the topic of the Blue Jays, whispers have been circulating for weeks suggesting that they may be willing to part with pitchers Kevin Gausman and Shane Bieber, as well as reliever Jeff Hoffman.
Skubal as the Centerpiece of Trade Talks
MLB executives identify the L.A. Dodgers as a potential destination for Detroit Tigers’ pitcher Tarik Skubal, especially with Shohei Ohtani’s knee injury sidelining him. Skubal is currently the player generating the most interest. Reports indicate inquiries from the Chicago Cubs, Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, and Tampa Bay Rays as well.
Additionally, media sources have revealed that the Boston Red Sox are on the lookout for a shortstop, while clubs like the Dodgers and Rays eye upgrades at catcher.
If the San Diego Padres opt to trade reliever Mason Miller, might the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are closely vying for a National League wild card spot just two games behind, make a play to enhance their bullpen?
Mitigating Sportsbook Risk
“The Braves are particularly noteworthy for me, given their strong prospects in the NL East and potential bye in the wild card round,” stated Chris Bennett, Sportsbook Director at Circa Sports in Las Vegas. “Acquiring a top-tier pitcher before the deadline could significantly enhance their chances against other National League contenders.”
“Several teams vie for playoff positions in the American League, making it hard to gauge who might make impactful trades. None of these teams are outstanding, and they all need reinforcement. I’m uncertain about which teams will secure a notable trade before the deadline,” he continued.
Monitoring Insider Information
The MLB trade deadline presents unique challenges for sportsbook traders.
“It’s essential to keep an eye out for major trades that could elevate one of the 6-8 contenders and alter market odds significantly,” remarked Phill Gray, a former head of sports betting operations now serving as an industry consultant. “It’s similar to draft day, where public knowledge can leak before sportsbooks adjust their odds.”
“I would generally avoid pricing based on speculation unless there’s credible information suggesting a significant trade is on the horizon. Even with feeds updating constantly, if a major trade appears imminent, I would suspend betting on affected markets or limit bets considerably to minimize risk,” he added.
Bennett mentioned he prefers refraining from changing odds until a trade is finalized.
Keeping an Eye on Contenders
“With so many conversations and rumors floating around, it can be overwhelming to keep track of everything,” Bennett explained. “I adjust our mobile app limits appropriately, ensuring that a strategic bet based on valuable information doesn’t adversely affect our position. I closely monitor my sources to react swiftly to trades and update odds promptly. It’s a compelling challenge.”
Christian Cipollini, Senior Trading Manager for BetMGM in Las Vegas, remarked that the MLB trade deadline tends to have a lesser impact on betting markets compared to other sports.
“Baseball is a more cohesive team sport; the influence of a single player isn’t as significant as in leagues like the NBA,” he added.
Implications for the World Series
“A prime example this year is the Philadelphia Phillies, with ongoing discussions and speculation about potential moves,” Cipollini noted. “We can reasonably trust this information, given they’re nearing the end of their championship window with the current roster. Competing against teams like the Dodgers requires all-out effort. Thus, we are likely to keep their championship odds competitive despite their recent struggles.”
Tarik Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, stands out as an exception, Cipollini observed.
“If a team emerges as a frontrunner to acquire him, we may preemptively adjust their odds,” he concluded.
“The challenge this season is the dominance of the Dodgers; they are currently a major favorite, and it would require significant moves to impact other teams substantially. The Dodgers (+170 at BetMGM to win the World Series) will remain the frontrunner regardless of potential trades.”
