The pioneering companies that revolutionized the lottery industry by introducing online courier services for players in states where online ticket purchases were unavailable continue to expand into new states and offer new products.
Lotto.com and Jackpocket.com are the top two online lottery courier services in the US. Lotto, established in 2018, recently expanded its operations to Massachusetts, joining its competitor in offering services in the state.
Lotto announced that its courier service started operations in Massachusetts at 9 a.m. Individuals aged 18 and above who are physically located in the state can now purchase draw and scratch-off tickets through the Massachusetts Lottery online.
In addition to buying tickets for national games like Powerball and Mega Millions, residents of Massachusetts can play other state lottery games such as Megabucks, Mass Cash, Lucky for Life, and The Numbers Game. Massachusetts is Lotto’s 11th state of operation, along with Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.
Richest Lottery States
Lotto is striving to catch up with Jackpocket in terms of the number of states it serves. Jackpocket, founded in 2013 and acquired by DraftKings this year, operates in 19 states, including Massachusetts.
In 2023, New York and Florida were the top two states in lottery sales, with $10.54 billion and $9.8 billion, respectively. Both states do not offer online sales, but Jackpocket operates in both while Lotto is currently only available in New York.
Lotto’s entry into Massachusetts is a significant move for the company, as Massachusetts, despite being the 16th most populous state, has the fifth-highest lottery sales, exceeding $6.1 billion in 2023. Unlike Jackpocket, Lotto also allows players to participate in Massachusetts Lottery scratch-off games.
Before online lottery couriers can provide their services, they must obtain approval from the state lottery and acquire a license to purchase tickets on behalf of customers.
Lottery Couriers
Jackpocket revolutionized the lottery industry by offering a convenient solution for players who prefer online options over physical retailers.
While 45 states operate lotteries, many still prohibit online sales to protect their retail partners. Advocates of online lottery sales argue that internet platforms boost revenue for lotteries and the programs they support.
For individuals who may find it challenging to visit physical stores, such as seniors or individuals with disabilities, online lottery couriers offer a convenient alternative in states where they are permitted.
When a customer purchases a lottery ticket through a courier, the app or website confirms the order and sends a detailed receipt with the numbers played. Both Jackpocket and Lotto securely store the paper tickets in a locked, fireproof vault.
Winning tickets are automatically credited to the player’s online account. For larger prizes that require in-person redemption, the ticket is delivered to the winner.
Couriers charge fees ranging from 15% to 25% per order, along with a 10% to 25% fee on deposits. They do not charge commissions on winnings or withdrawals.
Despite the fees, courier services eliminate the risk of losing a paper ticket or damaging it, providing peace of mind to players.
