The iconic Hollywood Casino riverboat in Joliet is poised to close on July 29, marking the conclusion of over thirty years of riverboat gaming in the area. This closure is scheduled just before the launch of a new $185 million land-based venue expected to open on August 11, pending final regulatory approval.

The riverboat will maintain its regular operating hours until it shuts down at 5:59 a.m. CDT on July 29. Meanwhile, the attached hotel will accept bookings until July 26.

Initially launched in the early ’90s as the Empress Casino, this riverboat was part of Illinois’ pioneering movement toward legalized gambling initiated by the 1990 Riverboat Gambling Act, which mandated that casinos function on water. Subsequent modifications in 1999 allowed operations dockside, and further legislative updates in 2019 facilitated the complete transition of riverboat casinos onto solid ground.

“As we move into our new cutting-edge facility, we’re grateful for our 30+ years of legacy in Joliet,” stated Jay Snowden, CEO and President of PENN Entertainment, the operator of the casino. “We eagerly anticipate not only providing premier experiences for our devoted customers but also extending a warm welcome to new visitors while continuing our support for the local community.”

The forthcoming Hollywood Casino Joliet will be situated within the Rock Run Collection, a blend of commercial and residential development at the crossroads of Interstates 80 and 55. The new establishment will feature approximately 1,000 slot machines, 43 live table games, a dedicated baccarat room, high-stakes areas, and an ESPN BET sportsbook.

Diverse dining and entertainment options will include Sorellina by Giada De Laurentiis and the Boulevard Food & Drink Hall. Sorellina will present a laid-back Italian menu, while Boulevard will showcase various local favorites, featuring Antique Taco, Pretty Cool Ice Cream, and Lucky Goat, a new burger concept by Stephanie Izard, alongside a café and full bar.

A 10,000-square-foot event center and more than 1,300 parking slots will also integrate into the new complex.

Ruben Warren, Vice President and General Manager of Hollywood Casino Joliet, urged patrons to visit the riverboat before its closure and take advantage of nearby PENN properties during the transition period.

“We express our gratitude to all our guests, loyalty members, and team members who have contributed to our riverboat’s unique experience over the past three decades, and we invite everyone to stop by one last time before July 29,” Warren remarked.

Guests can continue to exchange chips from the riverboat at the new facility’s cage until December 31, 2025. Other nearby locations, including Hollywood Casino Aurora and Ameristar East Chicago, will remain operational and will participate in the PENN Play rewards program.

The new Hollywood Casino Joliet intends to launch a fresh website on July 29, providing information on restaurant timings, menus, reservation details, and specifics about a special dining event featuring celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis scheduled for mid-August.
