Located near Tropicana Avenue and Pecos Road, approximately five miles southeast of the Las Vegas Strip, lies a unique house built in the 1970s by a former adult film star. The house is said to resemble an immense phallus — possibly modeled after his own. While this narrative might seem entertaining, it’s entirely misconstrued. Yet, the actual story behind the “Penis on Pecos” is just as captivating…
The Day of Construction
The residence was constructed in 1975 by Las Vegas locals Earl and Gloria Alger. They purchased the parcel, just two blocks away from their previous residence, from a woman named Eileen Largo back in 1973.
Interestingly, Earl had no involvement in adult films; he was busy electrifying the Strip’s casinos and managing his own electrical business.
When they enlisted an architect friend to craft a distinctive custom home, the Algers were blissfully unaware of how distinctive it would turn out to be.
This architect apparently wasn’t the best of friends (Earl only recalled him as “Martinez”), and it seems he played a prank of sorts on Earl and Gloria.
“He developed the design and suggested, ‘Hold off on any decisions until you see the plans, especially due to the round features,’” Earl recounted in a 2010 interview with the Las Vegas Sun.
Earl found the architect’s request peculiar but did not perceive anything inappropriate in the blueprints.
Initially, neither did others around them.
“No, that didn’t occur to me,” said Earl. “I just regarded it as a unique structure.”
However, a decade later, a pilot who used to fly over the neighborhood revealed the resemblance to Earl.
“To be candid — the long end indeed resembles a penis, with two spherical ends,” Earl recalled being told.
In all fairness, it doesn’t look exactly like a phallus and testicles when viewed from above. It resembles more of a Picasso-style interpretation, as it’s somewhat abstract and missing the head. From ground level, though, it seems just like any other quirky modernist home.
Nonetheless, once the moniker caught on, it was there to stay.
Art Reflects Reality
The Algers parted ways with the “Penis on Pecos” in 1993. However, this was far from the conclusion of its tale. In fact, it marked the beginning of an intriguing new chapter…
After operating as Djanel Spa & Salon from around 2003 to 2010, it transformed into the Studios in 2016, serving as an educational center for the LGBTQ+ community, until it lost its county business license four years later due to its involvement with the unlicensed Las Vegas Sex Dolls Experience.
Eventually, the “Penis on Pecos” embraced its urban legend status.
Since 2022, it has been functioning as a legal sex club for swingers.
“Did you know our house resembles a massive phallus?” queries the Instagram account for Club 5150 Pecos.
