An individual from East Windsor has been implicated in an incident at Foxwoods Resort Casino that prompted a significant police reaction, with reports indicating that at least one woman was held against her will.
According to an updated statement, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police Department reported that officers arrived at the Fox Tower following a call at 6:27 am regarding an “active disturbance” on the 16th floor.
“The caller indicated that the conflict was physical in nature,” stated Mashantucket Police Chief Robert Catania.
David R. Griswold, a 40-year-old from East Windsor’s Broad Brook neighborhood, approximately 45 air miles northeast of Foxwoods, has been identified as the accused. Griswold faces multiple charges, including two counts of criminal attempt at first-degree assault, two counts of unlawful restraint, breach of peace, interfering with police, two counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree, and carrying a firearm while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
If convicted on all counts, Griswold could face significant prison time, as many of the charges are felonies. Law enforcement has confirmed that he is being held on a $1 million bail.
Ongoing Developments
Casino.org was among the first to cover the extensive police presence at the Connecticut tribal casino on Monday morning. Initial reports suggested that a man had taken a woman hostage on the 16th floor, a claim that was later found to be incorrect.
Foxwoods officials clarified that both tribal police and other local and state law enforcement responded to a situation involving a man holding two individuals against their will. A statement from the casino operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation disclosed that the suspect had “illegally restrained two individuals before quickly releasing them” earlier that morning.
The subsequent hours-long standoff did not involve any additional victims in the hotel room. Police managed to safely “enter the room without any incidents” and apprehended Griswold.
Over two dozen police vehicles were stationed outside the Fox Tower’s main entrance until later on Monday afternoon. The casino and resort remained operational, with only restricted areas and the floors immediately surrounding the suspect’s hotel room being sealed off.
Agencies Involved in Response
In addition to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police Department, which manages most law enforcement activities on tribal lands, the Connecticut State Police and Ledyard Police Department responded to the incident.
A guest in a room adjacent to the incident reported to Eyewitness News 3 that after hearing a loud noise shortly after 6 am, he peeked out from his door and saw “a girl crawling down the hallway in distress.” According to him, police arrived on the scene swiftly, “coming in large numbers.”
Others reported being confined to their hotel rooms for several hours during the unfolding situation. The two individuals reportedly held in the room did not sustain any severe physical injuries.
