Officials from North Las Vegas Police suspect a man accused of being a serial shooter and arrested last month, who injured a child, may be responsible for gunfire directed at Las Vegas casinos on the Strip and various locations throughout the city.
Hector A. Rodriguez, age 36, was captured at a gas station in North Las Vegas on September 26 after a pursuit that concluded with a police K-9 subduing him, as detailed in an arrest report. Footage from the police’s bodycam of this event was shared publicly this week.
Child Injured in Shooting
The shooting incidents began on September 15 when a lieutenant at the Traffic Division of NLVPD discovered a bullet hole in his office. This location was targeted again on September 17 and 18, alongside multiple residences in the vicinity, according to officials.
In the following days, the police received a flurry of reports concerning shootings throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
On September 19, a 13-year-old boy was struck in the buttocks by a bullet from a passing vehicle as he walked home from school. The child was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
On that same day, gunfire was directed at the W Las Vegas Tower, part of Mandalay Bay, injuring a guest in a room, as stated by police.
Other locations hit by gunfire from the suspect include the Wynn Las Vegas, the Clark County Family Court Complex, and the VA Medical Center.
Pursuit and Apprehension
The night of his arrest, Rodriguez reportedly discharged a firearm towards police officers during a traffic stop, prompting a chase that reached speeds of up to 100 mph along the 215 Beltway.
Upon searching his residence, NLVPD uncovered a firearm linked to the shootings within their jurisdiction, along with several other similar incidents being investigated by Las Vegas Metro Police. Investigators also traced Rodriguez’s cellphone location to several crime scenes.
Authorities noted they discovered footage on his dashcam where he expressed intentions about targeting police officers, mentioning “shooting them in the head since they wear bullet-proof vests.”
Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including enhanced penalties for harming a child; however, the case is still developing, and further charges may be filed, as per police statements.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on November 7.
