In last night’s Mega Millions drawing, featuring an $800 million jackpot, 12 tickets fell just short of winning.
The drawing held on Tuesday, November 4 signifies the 37th consecutive drawing without a ticket matching all five white balls alongside the gold Mega Ball. For the next drawing on Friday, November 7, the estimated jackpot will be $843 million, with a cash option projected at $391.7 million.
The winning numbers from last night were 11, 14, 17, 50, 57, with the gold Mega Ball being 6. Twelve tickets matched four of the five white balls combined with the Mega Ball to claim the third-largest prize in the interstate lottery.
Among those, five tickets matched four plus the Mega Ball, earning $20,000 due to a 2X multiplier, while two tickets nabbed $30,000 with a 3X multiplier, and five won $40,000 using a 4X multiplier.
No ticket managed to match all five white balls to secure the top non-jackpot prize, which varies from $2 million to $20 million based on the multiplier applied.
A total of 606,046 winning tickets were recorded last night across all prize tiers, with combined winnings exceeding $12.2 million.
Unpredictability of the Jackpot
The ongoing Mega Millions jackpot represents the longest stretch in history without a winner. Mega Millions began in May 2002, but its origins date back to August 1996 with The Big One.
The chances of securing the Mega Millions jackpot stand at around 1 in 290.5 million. While these odds can’t be altered, the likelihood of hitting the jackpot increases as the prize amount rises, leading to more ticket sales and wider number combinations being covered.
The previous record for consecutive drawings without a jackpot win was set on January 22, 2021, when a $1.05 billion jackpot was claimed in Michigan. Jackpot wins are inherently unpredictable; they can occur consecutively or may roll over for extended periods,” stated a Mega Millions release.
The Powerball holds the record for the longest stretch without a jackpot win, hitting 42 drawings. This feat was recorded twice; first with a $1.326 billion prize won by an Oregon ticket in April 2024, and later in September, when two tickets from Missouri and Texas shared a $1.787 billion jackpot.
Winnings After Taxes
Should a single ticket win Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot and choose the cash option, the $391.7 million would face a 37% federal tax deduction, leaving approximately $246.8 million. State taxes may apply thereafter.
State taxation on lottery winnings varies widely, from 2.5% in Arizona to as high as 10.9% in New York.
States that offer the best tax benefits for lottery winners include California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming, as these states do not impose a state tax on lottery prizes.
