  • BetMGM is establishing a broader presence in Puerto Rico.
  • The sportsbook has been facilitating sports betting across the island since early 2022.

BetMGM initiated online sports betting in Puerto Rico in June 2023, collaborating with Casino del Mar at La Concha. Now, the sportsbook, which is part of MGM Resorts International, is amplifying its retail betting operations within the U.S. territory.

Paulson Puerto Rico, a company that operates the La Concha resort in San Juan, recently proclaimed its intention to broaden its collaboration with BetMGM Sportsbook across the island. Their hospitality portfolio also includes Condado Ocean Club, Condado Vanderbilt, Bahai Beach Resort & Golf Club, and St. Regis Bahai Beach Residences.

The physical BetMGM sportsbook at La Concha debuted in February 2022.

“Our aim is to duplicate the success we’ve experienced in San Juan by launching new locations throughout Puerto Rico. This will enable residents in various regions to enjoy the same high-quality entertainment that has made Casino del Mar and BetMGM a success,” stated Rolando Padua, President of Paulson Puerto Rico.

When Paulson and BetMGM established their partnership in September 2021, John Paulson emphasized the importance of “pursuing innovation in services and entertainment” within their resort properties.

Need for Physical Locations

Under Puerto Rico’s sports betting regulations, only residents can create online wagering accounts. Travelers must place their bets in person at physical sportsbook locations.

By extending BetMGM’s presence from Casino del Mar and San Juan, visitors will not only have broader betting access but will also ease the in-person account registration requirement. In addition to restricting online betting to residents, Puerto Rico’s sports betting laws state that new users must set up their mobile wagering accounts in person.

The sports betting sector is thriving on the island. The Puerto Rico Games Commission reported that the handle doubled in the fiscal year concluding in May 2025, with residents wagering over $313 million.

Sportsbooks in Puerto Rico

Sports betting was legalized in Puerto Rico in June 2019, shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that gave states and territories the power to regulate their own sports gambling laws.

Currently, the Caribbean island hosts only three legal sportsbooks, with Caesars Sportsbook and FanDuel being the other operators. Caesars offers sports betting both online and in-person at Casino Metro, located within the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino.

FanDuel collaborates with CAGE Companies, a licensed provider of gaming terminals in Puerto Rico. Its retail sportsbook is located on Palmeras St. in San Juan.

BetMGM’s expansion into new physical locations in Puerto Rico coincides with DraftKings contemplating entering the market.

There have been persistent rumors about DraftKings establishing a retail sportsbook at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel Foxwoods Casino, where DraftKings is the sportsbook and iGaming partner at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

Since 2022, DraftKings has hinted at a retail and online sportsbook in Puerto Rico, yet it remains an observer in the market.

In the United States, DraftKings and FanDuel dominate the sports betting landscape, holding a combined market share of approximately 65%. Fanatics follows with about 14%, while BetMGM sits at 5%. The remainder of the market includes Caesars Sportsbook, ESPN Bet, BetRivers, and bet365.
