The ongoing strike by casino workers at Horseshoe Indianapolis in Shelbyville is currently not affecting guests’ experiences.
Recently, Casino.org reported that a federal judge ruled in favor of Caesars Entertainment, which operates the casino, stating that picketing workers cannot protest directly at the entrance. Judge James Patrick Hanlon determined that the casino had the right to involve law enforcement to warn the picketers of potential trespassing charges.
Judge Hanlon agreed with the argument that the location of the workers’ strike does not qualify as public property, necessitating their relocation to the parking lot across N. Michigan Road.
Customer Feedback and Ongoing Strike
The Teamsters Local 185 picket line was initially positioned on the opposite side of N. Michigan, near the casino’s parking garage. Feedback from patrons indicated that the strike was obstructing their access to the gaming facility, which features 1,500 slot machines, 65 table games, and a Caesars Sportsbook.
“We’re innocent guests who just want to play slots,” voiced one visitor to Casino.org.
Around 200 table game dealers and dual-rate employees, who sometimes serve as floor supervisors, are involved in this strike as they seek unionization with the Teamsters chapter.
“They should be removed. The last two times I attempted to leave, they stepped in front of my car, shouting with a bullhorn. If they’re unhappy with their jobs, why not find new ones? It seems like common sense to me.”
Despite the strike, table games remain operational, as dealers picket during their off-duty hours. Caesars has also employed temporary dealers to fill in the gaps.
Caesars has declined to permit an independent auditor to oversee the union vote during the federal government shutdown, which stalled National Labor Relations Board activities. With the government now operating, the NLRB is anticipated to conduct the vote soon.
Teamsters Local 135 already represents various employees at Horseshoe Indianapolis, including slot attendants.
Weekend Demonstration
During the weekend, the strike at Horseshoe Indianapolis maintained high spirits with live music performances. Teamsters members from UPS joined to play classic country hits.
On Saturday, a “Labor Day in November” celebration occurred on the picket line, welcoming union representatives and supporters. The “solidarity cookout” was attended by Teamsters officials, workers, and their families, as the casino staff continue their struggle for union recognition.
The union alleges that at least one casino employee has been unjustly fired during this strike. Teamsters leaders claim that a casino floor supervisor participating in the picket during off-hours was terminated without cause.
