  • The UFC has arranged an interim lightweight championship match between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett in Las Vegas next month.
  • Pimblett is favored to win according to betting odds.

The champion of the UFC lightweight division, Ilia Topuria, has shared the reasons behind his choice to step away from the sport temporarily, a decision he publicly announced last month, citing a “challenging phase” in his personal life.

In a message shared on social media, Topuria mentioned he is facing extortion due to false claims of domestic abuse.

“In recent weeks, I made the tough choice to step back from my title defense. This was not an easy decision. However, when situations threaten your personal integrity, family, and reputation, you must confront them directly.”

Topuria elaborated on the extreme pressure he has faced, stating, “I have been subjected to intimidation tactics, including threats to spread false allegations of domestic abuse unless I met financial demands.” He emphasized that these accusations are entirely baseless, and the truth is not subjective but evidence-based.

“All pertinent evidence has been meticulously preserved, including audio recordings, written correspondence, witness testimonials, and video evidence. This documentation has been forwarded to the relevant judicial entities to pursue legal recourse for extortion attempts, evidence fabrication, misappropriation of assets, and various threats.”

Topuria further shared that his decision to initially remain silent was made “solely for the sake of my children, who are my highest priority.”

However, he broke his silence by stating, “I have come to realize that silence does not shield the truth; it allows false narratives to gain traction.”

Addressing Extortion

In discussing the threats he has endured, Topuria stated, “I am stepping forward not only for the benefit of my family and myself, but also to assert that no one should succumb to intimidation, manipulation, or fear. Those familiar with my character can confirm that I have never engaged in violence, and my life and career have always been governed by discipline, respect, and integrity.”

Topuria expressed full confidence that justice will be served through the legal system.

“Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal matters, I will refrain from making additional public comments,” he stated. “I kindly request that speculation cease, and my family’s privacy be respected during this sensitive period.”

Upcoming Interim Lightweight Championship

In the meantime, the UFC has not paused its activities, having organized an interim lightweight championship fight featuring No. 5-ranked Paddy Pimblett and No. 4-ranked Justin Gaethje at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on January 24.

According to BetMGM, Pimblett is currently the favorite at -208, while Gaethje stands at +170. DraftKings lists Pimblett at -205 and Gaethje at +170. FanDuel has Pimblett at -215 and Gaethje at +164.

The Rise of a UFC Superstar

Few athletes in the UFC have built a brand as significant as Topuria. Conor McGregor, known for his social media presence and business ventures, hasn’t made a notable impact in the octagon since his leg injury against Dustin Poirier in June 2021.

Light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, a knockout specialist with multiple titles, is recognized as one of the most feared and marketable champions following his rapid ascent to fame.

Topuria, on the other hand, is an undefeated megastar with immense charisma, a growing social media following, and substantial sponsorship potential, all while climbing through the divisions and taking down legendary UFC competitors.

UFC 326 Update

In another notable development, four prominent fighters have been added to the middleweight lineup for UFC 326, taking place on March 7 in Las Vegas. Former title challenger Paulo Costa, currently ranked No. 13, will face Brunno Ferreira, while No. 7-ranked Caio Borralho will battle No. 8-ranked Reinier de Ridder.
