The Petersburg Police Department conducted an extensive security briefing with multiple agencies on Wednesday, in preparation for the upcoming launch of Live! Casino in Petersburg, as law enforcement anticipates a significant increase in visitors and associated safety issues.
Over seven law enforcement agencies participated in the briefing held at the temporary casino venue, where attendees received insights from the casino’s security chief, according to WVTR-TV.
Stephen Jenkins, the chief of the Portsmouth Police Department, shared valuable experiences regarding the challenges faced during Portsmouth’s casino launch, including operational issues and crowd management tactics.
“[They] went through a similar experience that we are getting ready to face,” stated Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian, referencing the insights from Portsmouth.
Christian noted that Jenkins highlighted key concerns around traffic management, crowd dynamics, and unexpected public safety incidents.
“He provided us with insights on the challenges we might face, such as traffic issues, crowd sizes, and even potential criminal activities,” Christian explained. “Collaboration with our partners today was vital to ensure we are prepared.”
Law enforcement anticipates that the casino will draw approximately 100,000 visitors monthly, which could have repercussions reaching beyond the city. The main planning efforts are centered on traffic flow, crowd control, and overarching public safety measures as the opening date nears.
