Netflix has officially started production on a new Korean drama series set within a casino, further enhancing its impressive lineup of Korean originals. The Dealer is a gripping crime thriller overseen by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind Netflix’s record-breaking series, Squid Game, which remains the platform’s most-viewed show to date.

In a recent announcement from Seoul, Netflix revealed that the series is currently in production, with Hwang producing through Firstman Studio, the same production house involved with Squid Game.

The Casino Chronicles

The drama follows Jung So-min (Love Reset, Alchemy of Souls, Love Next Door) in the role of Geonhwa, described by Netflix as “an exceptional casino dealer whose wedding dreams go awry” after falling prey to a housing fraud. To make her way down the aisle, she must return to the perilous gambling world she once escaped.

As Geonhwa fights to reclaim her future, she discovers long-buried talents (whether they be intensified intuition or supernatural insight) that provide her with a competitive edge at the tables.

Co-starring is Ryoo Seung-bum (Good News, Tazza: One Eyed Jack, The Berlin File) as Hwang Chisu, a desperate gambler scraping by on whatever luck he can muster at the tables. He becomes entwined in Geonhwa’s increasing exploits as the tension escalates.

Lee Soo-hyuk (S Line, Queen Woo) portrays Jo Jun, a formidable and enigmatic casino player whose presence complicates the dynamics at every table. Ryu Kyung-soo (The Bequeathed, JUNG_E, YADANG: The Snitch) plays Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa’s fiancé — a caring partner at home but a tenacious investigator at work, adding another layer of conflict as Geonhwa delves deeper into the gambling underworld.

The Dealer signifies the series-directorial debut of Choi Young-hwan, a highly esteemed cinematographer in Korea. His past work includes blockbuster hits such as Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza: The High Rollers, and The Thieves. Young-hwan is celebrated for his dynamic visuals that enhance storytelling, and Netflix emphasizes that he is ready to capture the glitz, tension, and allure of the casino world.

With Hwang in the producer’s chair, Choi at the helm, and Firstman Studio supporting this venture, Netflix aims to position The Dealer as a high-caliber Korean crime series capturing a global audience.
