- PointsBet Canada is one of the first companies to formalize its intentions in Alberta.
- The operator entered Ontario’s igaming market in 2022.
- Alberta’s new igaming marketplace is projected to launch in Spring/Summer 2026.
This morning, PointsBet Canada announced that it has initiated its registration protocol in Alberta, allowing it to commence marketing activities in Canada’s fourth-largest province.

In January, it was announced that Alberta was initiating preregistration for operators keen on participating in the new, regulated igaming market.
Further details revealed a proposed tax rate of 20% on 97% of gross gaming revenue, alongside entry fees comprising a $150K annual license and a one-time $50K application fee.
Expected Launch in Spring/Summer
Subsequently, we reported during the ICE Barcelona event that Dan Keene, Interim CEO of Alberta iGaming Corporation, indicated to industry leaders that Alberta aims for a market launch in Spring-Summer.
“Alberta’s transition to an open and competitive iGaming framework is a significant advancement for Canadian players, providing increased options and consumer protections within a controlled setting,” stated Scott Vanderwel, CEO of PointsBet Canada, in an official press release.
Established Presence in Canada
“We are thrilled to offer our innovative, Canadian-centric sports betting and online casino solutions to residents in Alberta, supported by top-tier speed, responsible gaming features, and localized expertise.”
PointsBet has been active in Ontario’s regulated igaming landscape since its launch on April 4, 2022, with headquarters located on Queen St. W. in Toronto. The company has expressed a desire to expand into Alberta over the past few years.
Eligible residents in Alberta can now preregister with PointsBet to receive updates about the platform’s launch, as well as an exclusive welcome offer, ahead of the official rollout when Alberta’s regulated online environment becomes operational.
Operators Preparing for the Market
PointsBet continues its operations in both Australia and Canada and is now primarily owned by MIXI Australia after a successful acquisition last year.
Also anticipated to enter the Alberta market are operators such as FanDuel, BetMGM, theScore Bet, BetRivers, DraftKings, and NorthStar Bets.
Statistics reveal that Alberta’s gaming net operating income reached $1.57 billion in 2023-24, marking its highest point in seven years.
