The company has announced an updated terms of service, which now provides clearer guidelines around sports integrity and athlete safety. The previous version permitted account suspension for any lawful reason, including harassment.

Challenges in Sports Betting: Harassment from Gamblers

This past summer, notable comments from Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito highlighted the emotional toll of gambling-related threats. After a disheartening loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, he shared experiences of threats directed at him and his girlfriend by frustrated gamblers during a podcast with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

“It’s escalating, day by day,” Giolito stated. “While there are simple measures like going private on social media or blocking accounts, these actions only go so far. My concern is whether it will take a serious incident, such as a player being assaulted by an irate bettor, to provoke tangible action. Cybersecurity tools exist, yet social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter often do little to combat these issues.”

Ensuring Safety for Athletes and Coaches

Ottawa Senators’ standout player Brady Tkachuk has also weighed in on these challenges. BetMGM asserts that its updated terms of service reflect a stronger commitment to responsible gambling initiatives, including educational outreach through the GameSense program at ten football stadiums across the United States.

GameSense is a resource embedded in BetMGM’s platforms, offering users practical guidance on responsible gaming.

“Our dedication to maintaining sports integrity is unwavering, and we are committed to protecting athletes, coaches, and league officials,” stated Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s Chief Compliance Officer. “Our legally regulated framework allows us to detect misconduct, investigate concerns, and take appropriate measures when necessary. Any verified instance of harassment will lead to stringent consequences, including account suspension.”
