MGM Resorts International announced on Thursday, February 26, its collaboration with rap icon Flavor Flav to organize a significant celebration in Las Vegas for the victorious U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team this summer. The event named “She Got Game” is set to be a weekend-long festivity, possibly featuring a parade and concert, scheduled from July 16-19.

Flavor Flav, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, recently expressed on social media the need for a “true celebration” for the women’s team. In response, MGM has promised over 100 hotel accommodations from its luxury Las Vegas venues for the athletes.

“Preparations are in progress, and more details will follow as we gear up to honor our remarkable USA athletes in a unique MGM Resorts style: premium hospitality, electrifying entertainment, and unforgettable experiences,” MGM stated, adding that the women-focused sports media company The GIST will also join as an official partner.

Chilling Reception

This alternative celebration arose following a blend of historic triumph and political controversy. On February 19, the U.S. women’s hockey team clinched a stunning 2-1 victory over Canada in overtime. However, soon after, the triumph became clouded by controversy involving President Donald Trump.

Following the men’s team also securing gold, Trump humorously suggested he could be “impeached” if he did not invite the women’s team to the White House.

This comment sparked backlash from the athletes. Captain Hilary Knight appeared on SportsCenter, calling the joke “tasteless and disheartening,” emphasizing that such remarks “distract from the inspiring accomplishments” of female athletes. (USA Hockey later attributed the team’s decision to decline the White House invitation to “academic and professional obligations.”)

The players independently decided to accept Flav’s proposal.

Corporate backing and donations continue to pour in. The Palms Casino Resort has promised “extravagant” luxury suites and gourmet dining experiences to complement MGM’s offerings. Alaska Airlines responded to Flav’s request for travel support, confirming they are organizing flights for the athletes to reach the Vegas location.

Additionally, StubHub has also taken to social media, expressing readiness to assist with tickets for shows.

To ensure the athletes are valued beyond a brief weekend of hospitality, Flav has initiated a GoFundMe campaign aimed at providing direct financial “victory bonuses” to them.

Understanding that numerous Olympic athletes juggle multiple jobs to support their training, Flav has set a goal of $50,000 to deliver cash directly to their hands.

As of Thursday evening, more than $34,000 has been raised through the generosity of over 600 donors.
