Law enforcement agencies across multiple states are actively requesting public assistance to pinpoint the perpetrators of a seemingly coordinated series of hoax bomb threats aimed at tribal casinos in four different states.

On Sunday, June 28, a series of phone calls warning of a bomb or mass casualty event was received by nine tribal casinos in Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho.

These hoaxes took place almost simultaneously nationwide, causing disruptions and forcing evacuations.

Ongoing Investigations

Police departments from the tribes and local jurisdictions that oversee the nine casinos confirmed that their investigations revealed the threats to be false, asserting that there was no immediate threat to public safety.

Law enforcement agencies are soliciting tips from the public regarding what appears to be a coordinated hoax targeting tribal casinos. While the FBI has not publicly disclosed its involvement in the investigation, it typically engages in cases involving interstate crimes, threats to tribal territories, or terrorism threats.

Several of the casinos that were targeted have announced plans to enhance security measures in the upcoming days. The Quapaw Nation Marshal Service is deploying additional officers at the Downstream Casino Resort as a “precautionary measure.”

In February, the Comanche Nation also faced a bomb hoax, resulting in evacuations at their Comanche Nation Casino, Red River, and Kiowa casinos.

Legal Consequences of Bomb Threats

The legal repercussions for making a bomb threat differ from state to state, but it is generally regarded as a serious offense with substantial penalties.

A federal conviction for issuing a bomb threat can result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years. If a bomb threat leads to bodily injury or death, the potential penalties can be significantly more severe, including life imprisonment.

At the state level, convictions for bomb threats can lead to prison terms ranging from three to 20 years, with states like Florida and Massachusetts imposing the most extended sentencing guidelines.

Charges related to bomb threats are typically classified as felonies, resulting in a permanent criminal record.
